“Plexus” by Elena Helfrecht

Elena Helfrecht is a visual artist based in Bavaria. Her work revolves around exploring human consciousness through an autobiographical context such as her memories, experiences and imagination.

Elena uses photography as the medium to manifest her inner realm, creating narrative through uses of iconography, connecting dots between individual and collective human experiences.

‘Plexus’ is an ongoing project Elena created in 2018 following her grandmother’s death. She explores an idea of family contribution to shaping culture and collective psyche throughout history. “I return to my estate in Bavaria and uses the house and its archive as a stage and protagonists for an allegoric play”.

Elena reconnects fragments of her female linages (her mother and grandmother) filling gaps in between with imagination. Not only that, but she also investigates deep into subjects of postmemory, mental health, war, and history. Looking through her images is almost like we are in a dream state, when reality meets with raw inner thoughts and emotions.
